Many books and teachers talk about living a balanced life. What does this mean? There are many areas of life that need balancing—work vs time with family, activity vs stillness, exercising and sports vs relaxing, planning for the future vs being in the moment, and so on. Teachers like Abraham-Hicks and Eckhart Tolle talk about finding a balance between your feelings (or intuition), and your thinking mind. If we rely solely on our thinking mind we can get off on all kinds of tangents. A Native American proverb says “The hardest journey you will ever make is from your head to your heart.” It seems that many of us have a tendency to live mostly in our heads, relying mainly on our intellect and ignoring our feelings and intuition. I think it's important to note here that we are talking about heartfelt feelings, not egoic emotions like fear, anger, jealousy, greed, the need for control, etc.
For me, part of living a balanced life also means exercising your connection with Source, your higher self, or soul. In the course of our physical lives, our connection to Source often gets pinched off or diminished by traumatic experiences and the unenlightened teachings of the people around us. So we have to find ways to open up and maintain that connection. I believe meditation or sitting quietly in nature is a great way to do this.
